PESC Update – May 27

May 27 Planning Meeting for the Tar Sands Solidarity Journey & Healing Walk

PESC and WIRT invite all community members with a possible interest in participating in the third Tar Sands Solidarity Journey to and from the fifth and final Tar Sands Healing Walk on June 28 and 29 near Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. PESC and WIRT will host a planning meeting for the journey at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, May 27, at Maialina Pizzeria, 602 South Main Street in Moscow, Idaho.  Afterward, join local groups at the Kenworthy for the free, public, 7 pm screening of the weekly, climate change, television series Years of Living Dangerously.

Inspired to heal the people and places devastated by tar sands development, the Tar Sands Healing Walk is not a rally, march, or protest, but a respectful acknowledgment of suffering due to unhealthy energy addictions.  Participants walk in solidarity with First Nations (Native Americans) and tar sands activists and journalists from across the continent and world, at this hundreds-strong gathering. For more information about the Tar Sands Solidarity Journey and Healing Walk, visit the web pages at http://www.healingwalk.org/ and http://wildidahorisingtide.org/?s=Tar+Sands+Solidarity+Journey .  Contact Pat Fuerst of PESC at epfuerst@frontier.com and Helen Yost of WIRT at wild.idaho.rising.tide@gmail.com .

Let’s “Fill the Theater!!”

“Years of Living DangerouslyEpisode 6 this TUESDAY, 7 pm

followed by discussion led by Michael Jennings and others

Wikipedia: In Episode 6, “Winds of Change”, Ferrera reports on how public policy has supported the growth of wind and solar power in Kansas, and how the oil and gas companies, and their well-funded lobbyists and allies like the Heartland Institute and the American Legislative Exchange Council, are pushing lawmakers to reverse this. Meanwhile, Bittman discovers that extracting natural gas through fracking delays our transition to renewable energy and that fracking wells leak a large amount of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, which makes fracked natural gas as dirty as, or dirtier than, burning coal.

The 4 remaining episodes of “Years of Living Dangerously”:

  •  Tuesday 5/27- Episode 6
  •  Monday 6/2– Episode 7
  •  Monday 6/9– Episode 8
  •  Monday 6/16– Episode 9

Those interested in helping with how we are conducting the “Years..” series

Idler’s Rest Clean Up, Saturday, June 14,  9 am to 11:30 with lunch served

Back by popular demand:  Our second annual Idler’s Rest clean up with the Palouse Land Trust on Saturday morning, June 14, to celebrate National Trail Day.  PESC and our UUCP Environmental Task Force are pleased to co-sponsor this community-wide event which was so successful last year. Trish Heeken from the state and county conservation programs will join us again to share her expertise on native plants and invasive species found on the site. Contact is Pat Rathmann, Patty0727@hotmail.com  .

Next PESC meeting June 15?

At last Sunday’s meeting we discussed possibly reducing summer month meetings. We did not make a final decision. But we did agree that we should consider an early-August meeting (August 6 or 13). We may have showing of Gasland II when students return, and possibly a welcoming picnic in the fall, in addition to the Walk for Survival.

“Walk for Survival”shifted to September 20 (not 6th): does anyone know of conflicts on 20th?

A big Moscow-Pullman event to put on your calendars. We are changing date to synchronize with Bill McKibben and 350.org’s biggest climate demonstration in NYC:

Sept. 20 and 21when the biggest demonstration in the history of the climate movement takes place in New York City. We need you there, you and everyone you can think of to bring. Here’s the somewhat more formal invitation that I wrote out, for the current issue of Rolling Stone. Please share it—it’s the most important call we’ll send you this year. And if you’re ready to say you’ll be there, RSVP on Facebook here.
